작은 것이 아름답다

-고운 (본명: 최치선)

노랑으로 허공의 여백을 물들인 산수유를 보며

작지만 결코 작아보이지 않음을 알았다

하늘의 변화 무쌍함을 따라가지 않고

땅의 광대무변함을 시기하지 않고

본성에 충실하며 빠르지도 늦지도 않게

더하거나 부족하지도 않게

매화의 아름다움을 시기하거나 원망하지 않고

세상의 모든 냄새를 향기로 바꾸는 힘이 그에게 있었다

어둠이 스쳐 가기 전에 작음을 노래하는 산수유

가라앉음 뒤에 떠오름이

잠든 후엔 깨어남이 있듯

바람에 쉽게 흔들리는 꽃잎마저 파장에 몸을 맡겨

중천으로 흘러가도

처음 본 나그네의 시선이 닿을 때까지 미소를 잃지 않았다

겸손한 산수유의 꿈은

긴긴 겨울 수많은 무서리를 견뎌내고

봄햇살 창공에서 빗물처럼 쏟아질 때

잠깐의 인연으로 세상에 내려와 선물이 되었다

작음으로 빛나는 산수유를 보며

작음이 얼마나 아름다운지 알았다

작은 눈물로 튼튼하게 허공을 지탱하며

수많은 꺾임에도 다시 제자리를 찾아

큰 소리로 일어나서 노랑의 물결을 만들어

스스로 하늘이 되고 땅이 되었다

As I gaze upon the Sansuyu, tinting the void in yellow,

I realize that smallness is never truly small.

Unswayed by the ever-changing sky,

unenvious of the earth's constancy,

True to its nature, neither too fast nor too slow,

Neither excessive nor lacking,

It harbors no jealousy for the beauty of the plum blossom,

Transforming all the scents of the world into fragrance.

The Sansuyu sings of smallness before darkness sweeps by,

Understanding that after sinking comes rising,

That after sleep comes wakefulness,

Even its petals, easily swayed by the wind, surrender to the waves.

Even as it drifts toward the heavens,

It never loses its smile until it meets the gaze of a first-time wanderer.

The humble dream of the Sansuyu,

Enduring countless frosts through the long winter,

Becomes a gift to the world when it pours down like rain in the spring sunlight.

Witnessing the Sansuyu shine in its smallness,

I understood the beauty of being small.

Holding up the void with tiny tears,

finding its place again despite numerous bends,

It rises loudly to create waves of yellow,

Becoming its own sky and earth.
